Final Expense FMO: Contracts, Field Support and Lead Options

Published by Agent First Contracts

There is no single best IMO or FMO for every agent. The right fit depends on where you live, how you want to sell, how much support you need and how much you can invest in leads.

Use the checklist below to compare any Final Expense FMO or IMO, including us. Ask every organization the same questions and get the answers in writing.

IMO vs FMO in one paragraph

An IMO (independent marketing organization) and an FMO (field marketing organization) are both organizations that contract independent agents with insurance carriers and provide support. The labels are often used interchangeably. Judge any organization by its written terms, not its label.

Written-terms checklist

  • Carrier access: which carriers, in which states, and is each contract issued by the carrier with your own writing number?
  • Contract level: what commission percentage you start at for each carrier, and what (if anything) changes it
  • Commission vs advance: is commission advanced, how much, and how is the unadvanced balance paid?
  • Chargebacks: who is responsible for unearned advances if a policy lapses, and how are they recovered?
  • Vesting and renewals: who owns renewals and under what conditions?
  • Release policy: will they release you if you leave, on what terms and how quickly?
  • Field support: who answers underwriting and contracting questions, and is ride-along or review time actually available?
  • Lead terms: are leads optional, how are they priced, are they exclusive, and what happens if a county can't be filled?
  • Costs: any monthly fees, required software or minimum purchases?

Commission vs advance: why it matters

Two offers with the same commission percentage can feel very different in your bank account. An advance pays part of a policy's first-year commission up front, but if the policy lapses early, the unearned part is usually charged back. Read both the commission schedule and the advance and chargeback terms.

Vesting and releases

Ask in writing whether you are vested in renewals, what happens to them if you leave, and the organization's release policy. Release decisions also depend on each carrier's rules. Nobody can guarantee every carrier will approve a transfer on a set timeline.

What real field support looks like

  • A named person or team you can reach with underwriting questions during appointments
  • Training built for field sales, with an outline you can see before signing
  • Help with contracting paperwork and status updates
  • Clear answers about what support is guaranteed and what depends on availability

Warning signs

  • Income promises or guaranteed earnings
  • Pressure to sign before you see contract levels
  • Vague or unwritten release terms
  • Required purchases you cannot review in advance
  • Guaranteed territories, appointments or approvals

Frequently asked questions

What is the best company to sell Final Expense insurance for?

It depends on your state, sales style and support needs. Compare contract levels, release policy, carrier mix, training and costs rather than relying on 'best' claims, including ours.

Should I choose a Final Expense FMO or IMO?

Judge the organization by its terms, not its label. The checklist above applies to both.

What is the difference between an IMO and an FMO?

The terms are often used interchangeably. Both are marketing organizations that contract agents with carriers and provide support.

Should a new agent join a captive company or an IMO?

Captive roles may offer more structure; independent IMOs typically offer more carrier choice and ownership. Compare the terms that matter to you.

Does Agent First Contracts require me to buy leads?

No. Leads are available but optional.
