Life Insurance Agent Commission Structure Explained

Published by Agent First Contracts

Commission structure determines how and when you get paid for a policy. Understanding it helps you compare offers and plan for expenses and chargebacks.

This is an educational guide. The example and calculator are hypothetical and are not Agent First's rates, an offer or an earnings guarantee. Actual schedules vary by carrier, product and contract.

The building blocks

  • Annualized premium (AP): the monthly premium times 12
  • Commission percentage: the share of first-year premium paid as commission under your contract
  • Advance: part of first-year commission paid up front when the policy is issued, if your contract allows
  • Earned commission: commission that has been earned as the client pays premiums
  • Renewals: smaller commissions some contracts pay in later policy years
  • Vesting: whether you keep renewals if you leave or stop producing
  • Chargebacks: repayment of unearned advance if a policy lapses or is canceled

Hypothetical example

A $60 monthly premium is $720 annualized premium. At a hypothetical 100% commission, gross first-year commission is $720. With a hypothetical 75% advance, $540 is paid up front and the remaining $180 is typically paid as premiums are received, depending on the contract. Actual schedules vary.
