What Are Chargebacks in Insurance? A Guide for Agents
Published by Agent First Contracts
This page is about agent commission chargebacks, not credit card payment disputes. A chargeback happens when a policy lapses or is canceled and the carrier recovers commission that was advanced but not yet earned.
Your actual contract determines how chargebacks are calculated and recovered. The example below is illustrative only.

How a chargeback happens
If your contract advances part of the first-year commission, you receive money before the client has paid the premiums that earn it. If the policy lapses or is canceled early, the unearned portion of that advance is typically owed back, often deducted from future commissions.
Illustrative ledger
Assume a $60 monthly premium ($720 annualized), a hypothetical 100% commission ($720 first-year commission, or $60 earned per paid month) and a 75% advance ($540). The client pays 4 months, then the policy lapses.
Earned: 4 months × $60 = $240. Advance received: $540. Unearned advance: $540 − $240 = $300, which is the chargeback in this example.
Real contracts may calculate this differently, for example by charging back the full advance within an early period or using different earning schedules. There is no single universal chargeback period.

Enter your own hypothetical numbers, including how many months the client paid before a lapse, to see earned commission and unearned advance under the simple month-by-month method above.
| Monthly premium | $60.00 |
|---|---|
| Commission | 100% |
| Advance | 75% |
| Months paid before lapse | 4 |
| Advance received | $540.00 |
| Earned before lapse | $240.00 |
| Unearned advance (chargeback) | $300.00 |
